We are proud to announce that Jane Frankel Sims, firm founder and managing attorney, has been named as a 2016 Leadership in Law honoree by the Maryland Daily Record. Just 25 members of the Maryland legal community were recognized with this award for their outstanding work.
“Leadership in Law honorees devote time, talent and energy to bettering the legal profession in addition to the communities in which they live and work,” explained Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of The Daily Record. “They demonstrate a commitment to improving communities throughout our state through notable pro bono work and other means. They are also committed to mentoring, which is a key component of this award.”
Nominees were asked to outline their career accomplishments, community involvement and mentoring activities that would distinguish them as outstanding leaders in the law. The award was established in 2001 to honor Maryland legal professionals — lawyers and judges — whose dedication to their occupation and to their communities deserves particular recognition.

Cristina Lujan - An International Career Path To Frankel Sims Law
At Frankel Sims Law, we have a strong commitment to mentoring our attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants. A particularly fond example of this mentorship involves Cristina Lujan, a paralegal at our firm, who recently completed her final year at the University of Baltimore School of Law. Cristina was already a lawyer in Mexico when she came to the United States as an Au Pair to improve her English skills. Jane’s family had the good fortune of being Cristina's host family when she arrived in Baltimore. While serving as an Au Pair, Cristina received an M.B.A. online from a prominent university in Mexico, and Jane encouraged her to obtain an L.L.M. degree so that she could practice law in the U.S.
Cristina had always intended to go home to her family in Northern Mexico at the end of her 2 year term as an Au Pair, but during her time here the drug cartel violence in her hometown posed such a danger that her parents discouraged her from returning to Mexico. Instead Cristina continued her studies in the U.S., and soon met her future husband Marcos. After they married, we helped Cristina become a legal permanent resident of the U.S. and hired her as a paralegal at our firm. Last year, Cristina proudly became a U.S. citizen and graduated from the international L.L.M. program at the University of Baltimore School of Law for which FSL paid a portion of her tuition. Cristina is now studying for the Maryland Bar, and we look forward to having her as our next new attorney at the firm.
At FSL, Cristina manages the estate administration arm of the firm. Seeing Cristina in the office every day and knowing how far she has come on her personal and professional journey is so rewarding. Congratulations Cristina! You are truly an example of hard work and determination - and we are fortunate to have you on our team.
Firm Retreat Takes Us To Sedona, Arizona
At Frankel Sims Law, we believe that a culture of collaboration is one of his most important responsibilities we have as a firm. Throughout the year, our team comes together outside the office to recharge and relax. Travel has greatly helped the FSL team come together - so we hit the road for the geological wonderland, multi-hued stone formations of Sedona, Arizona.
Together we explored trails for hiking, bouncy jeep tracks and took in the beauty of red rock country. It was a great way to experience new things and explore new cultures. There were so many benefits that emerged from our time together: team building, relaxing and just being together in an environment that encourages thoughts and discussion. For a few days, the high desert became our setting away from work.

FSL Attorney, David Forrer, Performs In William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night At Boordy Vineyards
They say you can’t judge a book by the cover - so is the case with FSL’s David Forrer - attorney by day and thespian by night. David recently performed in Twelfth Night, or What You Will for the Baltimore Shakespeare Factory, a nonprofit organization that entertains, educates, and enriches the Baltimore community by creating performances that inspire audiences with the wonder of William Shakespeare’s plays and language. As with all Shakespeare Factory productions, Twelfth Night was presented using the staging conditions of Shakespeare’s day. The production was presented at Boordy Vineyards in Hydes Maryland. Bravo David, Bravo.
